Course Description

World Studies is a year-long course that covers world history and culture from the dawn of the Renaissance in Europe until the present. Along the way, we will focus on building social studies skills such as deep reading, critical thinking, and clear, meaningful writing. As an IB for all school, all Amundsen courses will use MYP unit frameworks to give instruction, conceptual grounding and an overarching theme for each quarter. Lessons address developments in religion, philosophy, the arts, science and technology, and political history and draws connections to the present. The course also introduces geography concepts and skills within the context of the historical narrative. Students analyze primary sources and maps, create timelines and complete other projects— practicing historical thinking and writing skills as they explore the broad themes and big ideas of human history. Course Vision: Students in World Studies will learn historical content through the development of literacy skills. This is done through active participation in daily activities and mastering objectives and Common Core Standards, including researching and analyzing multiple sources and resources to develop and defend positions. Our focus is create global citizens, as well as prepare students for college through growth in literacy skills.
