Rapunzl Stock Market Competition in Google Classroom

Rapunzl Stock Market Competition

1. Watch this video: https://youtu.be/ZCFkWDdmXG8
2. Download the 'Rapunzl' app via iPhone or Andriod app store (it's free)
3. Create an account (use your CPS email!)
4. Confirm your account (you'll be sent a confirmation email)
5. Add me as a friend (a request has already been sent to you)
6. Once you're all set up, start investing!

Investing in the stock market is, in a nutshell, an opportunity to grow your money. Although the prices of individual stocks may rise and fall on a daily basis, the stock market tends to rise in value over time. Investments in stable companies (such as Disney, Amazon, Netflix, Google, etc.) that are able to grow tend to make profits for investors (i.e. you).

You have been given $10,000 (not real money) to buy and sell stocks! Choose from thousands of companies/ businesses (such as the ones above) to invest your money into and watch your money grow. Your assignment, should you choose to participate, will be to invest in companies/ businesses and make a profit (i.e. make money). The student with the highest total amount of money by June 12th, wins!

You will get 10 extra credit points just for creating an account and adding me as a friend. The winner of this stock market competition will receive 20 extra credit points + a prize (a $20 gift card of your choosing will be mailed to you).

If you have any questions, please let me know! Good luck and happy investing!

TASK #4 - MONTHLY BUDGET in Google Classroom

TASK #4 - MONTHLY BUDGET

Comlpete the attached spreadsheet. Your objective is to determine how much money you have left over after you've subtracted ALL of your expenses (both fixed and variable) from your month's salary - this is what we'll refer to as your ALLOWANCE.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Due:

TASK #3 - PLAN YOUR MEAL EXPENSES in Google Classroom

TASK #3 - PLAN YOUR MEAL EXPENSES

You've picked an apartment and furnished it, now all that's left to do is to stock your kitchen! Your job for task #3 is to buy groceries for the month by comparison shopping and evaluating prices online (resource links are in the spreadsheet). You will determine your expenses for a two-week period and multiply that total by TWO. This will give you a total (in $) of your monthly meal expenses. YOU MUST COMPLETE THIS TASK INDIVIDUALLY!

Please complete the attached "MEAL EXPENSES" spreadsheet ON YOUR OWN!!

For those of you with one of the following jobs, DON'T FORGET YOUR JOB PERK:
Jewel-Osco = 15% off groceries
Chipotle = Free food (limit $15.00 per transaction)
Starbucks = 50% off total purchases
Mariano's = 10% off groceries

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Due:

TASK #2 - FURNISH IT in Google Classroom

TASK #2 - FURNISH IT

As a group, pick a place to live and furnish it! You have been gifted $1,000 (each) in your savings account - use this money to buy furniture. In addition to $1,000, you're also each allowed to bring TWO (2) items from home (choose items wisely).

Use the following websites to help get you started:

Complete the attached organizer by comparison shopping and evaluating prices online. Have one member of your group open this document and share it with the rest. Your total purchases may not exceed $1,000 (each). Decide between the 2 (or 3) of you how you're going to split/ divide the costs (Ex. Roommate #1 purchases the TV; Roommates #2 & #3 purchase the couch).

If you have any questions, please le me know.

Due:

TASK #1 - FIND AN APARTMENT in Google Classroom

TASK #1 - FIND AN APARTMENT

Each member of your group has picked a school and a part-time job. Now it’s time to find a place to live. Find an apartment that's not only reasonably priced, but also reasonably located - an apartment that both (or all three) of you can agree upon.

Things to keep in mind...
1. Figure out how much you can afford by combining your (monthly) salaries. You’ll have other (variable and fixed) expenses, so don’t spend your entire budget on rent.

2. Use the following resources to start your apartment hunt:
a. https://www.apartments.com/
b. https://www.zillow.com/
c. https://www.rent.com/

2. You are not required to pay a "move-in fee" or "security deposit" - DO NOT factor in these expenses.

3. Average utility costs (i.e. heat, gas, water, and electricity) = approx. $150 per month. You MUST factor this cost into your total.

Complete the attached organizer by having one member of your group open this document and share it with the rest. Your job is to complete ONE (1) search each - you will make a final apartment decision as a group later (TASK #2). You also have the option to download and upload separately (remember you're still only performing ONE (1) search each).

If you have any questions, please let me know!
