We glossed over it since it was technically right before the beginning of the course, but the bubonic plague was one of the most devastating pandemics in history. Even so, after a period where almost everyone was convinced the world was actually ending, society recovered and the effects of the plague can be linked to many of the things that we studied. I've linked a few sources; from them, if you want to get the replacement credit, you can answer the following questions:
- Summarize and categorize (social, economic, political, etc) one effect that the plague had.
- What is something we learned about in class that you think could have been impacted by this effect? How?
- What effects do you think the current pandemic might have on us? Do you think they will be similar or different to how the plague impacted people?

Attached are two short articles on how Chicago responded to the last big epidemic to hit the US, the "Spanish Flu" of 1918. You can just read them if you want, but if you'd like credit for a previous missing (or just want practice) you can answer the following questions and attach them to this assignment in a google doc:
- What are some ways that Chicago responded to the flu in 1918?
- What are some ways (at least 2) how the response in 1918 to the flue compares or contrasts to the response you see to the coronavirus today?
- What do you think has changed about Chicago or the world that might explain any differences in the response? What has stayed the same that might explain similarities?

Post a line on this question listing any time of history you'd like to learn about. Like I said, I don't want to devalue the holocaust unit by just throwing it out on classroom for people to maybe look at, but any other (school appropriate) time, place, or topic is game. If someone else posted what you wanted please still do chime in (even if you just reply to their post with "same" or something), because I'll be putting the most popular suggestions into a poll for everyone to vote on.
Due:
Last actual assignment before the non-instructional days kick in (if you were in class on Monday, 3/16 you did this and already will get credit for it)
- Choose TWO of the four readings from pgs 38-47 in the Student Guide (Education in the WR, Voices in the Dark, Hyperinflation, or Women in the WR).
- Read those two readings, write answers to the questions that follow into a google doc, and attach them here.
- Make a public comment on this assignment saying one thing that one of your reading made you feel and why. You're allowed to respond to other people's comments, even if you read it in class.
- (If you turn this in on paper the next time we see each other, it will not be late).
