6/8: 6 Word Story in Google Classroom

6/8: 6 Word Story

This week, we are asking you to write a story in just 6 words. You can make it autobiographical about your remote learning experience or about your life in general. You can make it a commentary on society, or you can make it a fictional story. It's up to you. Please submit your story here. I will also create a Padlet so that you can share your story with your peers and so that you can read all of the stories that your classmates write. Have fun!

Below is an article that explains 6 words stories and provides some examples for you. I have also provided two links so that you can read more about this project.

From: "Can You Tell Your Life Story In Exactly Six Words?"
February 3, 2010 12:00 PM ET
Heard on Talk of the Nation--NPR

Once asked to write a full story in six words, legend has it that novelist Ernest Hemingway responded: "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn."

In this spirit, Smith Magazine invited writers "famous and obscure" to distill their own life stories into exactly six words. It All Changed in an Instant is the fourth collection of very, very brief life stories from Smith. The tiny memoirs are sometimes sad, often funny — and always concise.

It All Changed in an Instant is full of well-known names — from activist Gloria Steinem ("Life is one big editorial meeting"), to author Frank McCourt ("The miserable childhood leads to royalties"), to actress Molly Ringwald ("Acting is not all I am").

Larry Smith, founding editor of Smith, and Rachel Fershleiser, Smith's memoir editor, talk to NPR's Rebecca Roberts about the fun and the challenge of capturing real-life stories in six little words.

Smith's six-word memoir? "Now I obsessively count the words." And Fershleiser's: "Bookstore to book tour in seconds."

Can you write your autobiography in one sentence? Share your six-word memoir.

6/5: Free Reading and Creative Writing in Google Classroom

6/5: Free Reading and Creative Writing

It's almost Friday--and another day closer to the summer!!!! Your annotations and written reflections were extraordinary this week.

Remember that on Fridays, we will give you the choice to either participate in a Free Reading exercise or a Creative Writing exercise as an independent, enrichment opportunity.

If you would like to write about something that is not on this list of prompts, you obviously may do so. The topic is your choice this week.

1. Free Reading: Read anything of your choice. Read anything that interests you. Just read!!! Our primary objective is to get you to enjoy reading so that you do it more. So, find a novel, a memoir, a graphic novel, a biography, a magazine, an online article about anything that interests you, and read for 30 minutes. After you do this, post your reflection of your reading here. The reflection should be at least a paragraph. (CPS Virtual Library is available to all of you if you are looking for a new book. I have attached directions for accessing it). The Critical Thinking Rubric is also attached.

2. Creative Writing: Attached are 365 Creative Writing Prompts. Find one that resonates with you, and WRITE. Turn on some music, and let your creative spirit soar. Find the right prompt for you. Post your creative writing response here. The Creativity Rubric is attached.

We love reading these each week. We hope to hear from more of you this week!

Due:

6/4: ATL Reflection and Google Meet in Google Classroom

6/4: ATL Reflection and Google Meet

It was so wonderful to speak with you all today and to see some of your faces and hear some of your voices! We miss you.

Please respond to any/all of the following prompts: (Please offer an elaborate and thoughtful response for a good grade).

Reflect on your experience in today's Google Meet. Tell us what you enjoyed about it (or did not enjoy), and/or tell us how it made you feel to hear from others and from your teachers. Tell us why you chose to not participate in the discussion. What did you like/dislike about the texts this week? Why? How was this week of remote learning for you? Explain. What questions do you have about the texts or about English class right now? Reflect on your organizational skills during this week. What were your challenges/successes? ATL means Approaches to Learning--how are your ATLs different during remote learning than they are in the school environment? Reflect on how your emotions are impacting your learning this week.

Due:

6/3: Wednesday CEA in Google Classroom

6/3: Wednesday CEA

Typically on Wednesdays, I ask one question, and you respond. I ask for textual evidence and APA citations. I do not have the same expectations today. Given recent events, I do not have just one question to ask, nor do I have the right question to ask. So, instead, if you would like to engage today, please respond to one (or all) of the following prompts in a well developed paragraph:

1. What is the dominant emotion that you are experiencing right now? Explain.
2. What question do you believe is the most important question to ask each other (citizens) today? Explain.
3. In your opinion, what is immediately needed to help heal our nation and its citizens? Explain.
4. How do you plan to contribute to fostering change in America? Explain.
5. How do you think we can begin to end systemic racism in our society?
6. What is one way that schools and educators can contribute to stopping/ending racism? Explain.
7. How does this moment in time compare to/connect to another moment in your life? Explain.
8. Decide your own writing prompt today, and respond to it.
9. Explain something that gives you hope today.
10. Who do you find to be inspiring today? Explain.

Due:

6/2: Tuesday Reading(s) and Analytical Annotations in Google Classroom

6/2: Tuesday Reading(s) and Analytical Annotations

Good evening, everyone. In light of recent events, we decided to provide you with a number and a variety of texts/videos this week. We certainly encourage you to read/view them all, but if you would like to earn points for analytical annotations this week, you only need to use/choose one text. We are asking for 2 annotations. Since there are a variety of texts this week, please be sure to include APA citation. (You can still cite a video). Some links are provided below, but some texts are also included as attachments. We realize that Dr. King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" is long, but we encourage you to read it. Take the time if you have it.

There will be other opportunities this week to read other texts related to our nation's most recent events, and there will be more opportunity to reflect and react in writing and discussion. If this is too upsetting, you are not at all expected to engage.

It's almost Friday--and another day closer to the summer!!!! You guys did fabulous work this week. We loved reading about your experiences in nature and how you are improving your emotional well-being by getting outside during this time!

Remember that on Fridays, we will give you the choice to either participate in a Free Reading exercise or a Creative Writing exercise as an independent, enrichment opportunity.

2. In the context of the text, what do people gain when they interact with the natural world? Cite evidence from this text, your own experience, and other literature, art, or history in your answer.
3. In the context of the text, how can we achieve happiness? Do you think the Kaplans’ keys to happiness apply to young people as much as older people? Why or why not?

You guys are doing such a wonderful job. We love reading all of your work. For those of you with Fs and Ds still, you are so close! Finish strong! We are here to help support you!

5/14: ATL Reflection

So great hearing from so many of you today! We miss you! We didn't have as much time to talk about the poem in the GM today, so I am hoping you can offer a reflection here. So, please respond to any/all of the following prompts:

What did you like/dislike about the poem? Why? What more would you like to talk about in our Google Meets? Explain. How was this week of remote learning for you? Explain. What questions do you have about the poem or about English class right now? Reflect on your organizational skills during this week. What are your challenges/successes?

5/13 Written Response in Google Classroom

5/13 Written Response

I hope that you all saw my post today on the stream about grades. I am going to continue to provide something every day for all of you. Just remember that this is intended only to offer you some opportunity to remain cognitively engaged. I am not, AT ALL, intending to add any pressure or anxiety. I know that you are bombarded with posts and emails each day (in addition to this pandemic), and that can be extremely overwhelming and difficult to navigate. Just know that you can always email me or Ms. Triplett, and we will support you--no matter what.

For Wednesday's assignment: Check out this commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HabwTo6YgQI&authuser=0

Assignment: Choose one of the following prompts:

1. How is the theme of the poem and/or the commercial relevant to today's society?
2. How can you connect to the theme of the poem/commercial?

This should be a paragraph response. Make sure to follow the same structure as a CEA, though you do not necessarily need textual evidence. Start with a clear claim. Then explain.

I can't wait to read what you think. Also, go to bed earlier than usual if you can. ;)

Lastly, a few students with low grades reached out to me today, and I made a simpler, more reasonable plan for them to get their grades to improve. Please spread the word. If you are failing, it is not too late! I can help make this much easier! Please email me or respond to my emails! Text your friends and tell them!

Due:

5/12: Tuesday Reading and Analytical Annotations in Google Classroom

5/12: Tuesday Reading and Analytical Annotations

Please read the attached poem. Make 2 Analytical Annotations in the same chart format that we have used all year. I will attach a template. Disregard the additional 3 rows. That's right, I said only 2.

Consider this: We are lowering the number of annotations that you need to make this week, but we are RAISING our expectations. Each annotation will be worth 10 points, and we will be strictly following the MYP rubric which is also attached. Remember, you cannot earn higher than a C on an annotation if you do not provide a deep analysis. Please refer to the rubric. We suggest avoiding annotations like style, structure, and language (for unfamiliar words). Dig deep. Ask yourself how your annotation has an effect on the reader, how it connects to the overall theme, why it's significant, and/or what the author's overall purpose was in including that line.

Don't forget your APA citation either. (Author's Last Name, Year of Publication, p. #). No punctuation before the end quote. Punctuation after the parentheses. Since we are all reading the same text, only the page number matters this week. So it should be: (p. 1). You're welcome ;)

Reach out with any questions. Please submit this on time. Looking forward to reading your annotations. Wish we could talk about this in 226!

Wednesday, April 15th: CEAEA

Today's assignment is for a summative grade. This is an incredible opportunity for those of you with Ds, Fs, or even Cs. If you do well on this today, your grade could improve quite significantly given that the summative grade is a separate category from virtually everything else that you have done this quarter.

Today, you will write a CEAEA paragraph using the text from yesterday. You do not need to have done yesterday's assignment in order to complete today's summative. The text can be found at the following link:

You may choose one of the following prompts to answer:
1. What are the limitations and challenges of 'remote learning'?

OR

2. Can remote learning provide educational benefits during a time when students are not able to meet in traditional classrooms?

*Do not forget proper APA citation! Hope to hear your responses today!

I am including the CEA rubric to inform your writing.

Make 5 Analytical Annotations in the basic chart format that we have used all year long. They should be 5 different types of annotations. The first column contains the quote (with APA), then the second has the type of annotation, and lastly the third contains the analysis. Remember, the more in depth your analysis and responses are, the higher your grade will be. Please submit your AAs here. If you would rather write your responses than type them, you may send screen shots of your work. Just please make sure that the quality of the picture is good enough for your old teacher to read ;)

Let me know if you have any questions! Have a great day.
