3rd Biology-3rd period (Period 3) Assignments

Hello everyone, in light of the most recent racial injustices, I thought it would be important to examine the actual biology of skin color. The cells that make up our skin color obviously should have no impact on a person's worth, and should not determine how your life experiences unfold. Please use this optional assignment to examine your own thoughts, feelings, knowledge, and preconceived ideas about skin color and racial injustice. I care about you all very much, and I hope we can all keep our hearts and minds open to make a more just future.

To keep your brain active, try these optional fun puzzles and brain teasers! Turn them in and prove how smart you are.

Thursday we will have a Google Meet at 12pm where we will play a fun Kahoot to guess which animal is being slow revealed, and what animal is being shown based only on its eyeball! I hope you will join me for the game.

Watch part 2 of our awesome movie from last week called "Birth of Humanity", 51 minutes long. As you are watching, answer the analysis questions. Remember that your CPS log in will block YouTube, you can copy the link and paste it in to YouTube, or just search YouTube for the same title. You can type on the document directly or write your answers on looseleaf and attach.

As our last activity in Human Evolution, you will read about how human social life developed by using information from the Smithsonian Institute. You can read and type your answers all in the document below, or also go through the actual website. Either way, the first thing to do is watch a 2 minute video on the Smithsonian website, so check it out! There is lot more than social life to explore that we don't have time for! Since we just finished studying DNA evidence for Evolution, DNA similarities among human relatives is our next topic. Read the one page article and answer the two questions that follow on the next page. You may type directly on the document below or write on looseleaf paper and attach a photo to Google classroom.

Hard to hear the news about the Shelter in Place order being extended, but it really is working and helping slow down the disease spread so everyone who needs treatment can get it. Today you will continue to learn how homologous structures show evidence of a common ancestor.

Go to the “Similarities and differences: understanding homology and analogy” website to complete your Homologous and Analogous Interactive Online Lab student answer sheet.

Today you will work on slides 1-4. Make sure you Zoom in to at least 50% or use the magnifying glass icon to zoom into 50% so it is easy to read everything. Read the 2 pages article titled "Homologous Structures".

Day One Homework: Answer the questions #1-3 using complete sentences from the Common Core Reading by typing on slide 4 or you can attach a separate Word document.

Day Two Homework: read the instructions on slide 5 VERY carefully, repeat, and then watch the instructions 10 second video before you begin. You are going to outline the different homologous bones using different colors to represent the same bone in each animal. On the last slide you will answer analysis questions by typing directly into the text boxes.

This is a two day assignment and is due on Friday.

Today you will learn about evidence for the theory of evolution, what homologous structures are, and how homologous structures are often used as evidence for evolution.

After carefully watching and learning, complete the Google Form answering factual questions about the video.

Today you will begin a Cladogram Project which will demonstrate your mastery and understanding of Cladograms. This project is not due until Monday, and you can choose any biology student, in any class, from any teacher, to be your partner if you choose. We would love for you to partner up and "socialize" with another Amundsen Biology student. You will also have time to work on the project during "Science time" on Friday, so while this is a big assignment, it is the last one of the week. There are several steps, and you can break up the work that way.

Tomorrow, Thursday, at 12pm, we will have our "live" Biology meeting on Google Meet. Please be ready to join to ask questions and see a mini-lecture on Cladograms.

The task for today is to visit the website "Cladogram-Definition and Examples Biology Dictionary" linked below and, after reading, answer questions. You should open the Google Doc "Cladogram Reading Questions" below, type the answers, then submit/share with me. If you have any questions or are unable to access any of the sites or document, please reach out and let me know you need help.

Today you will practice what you learned about Cladograms in yesterday's reading by analyzing several cladograms to make sure you understand them, and practice creating one of your own. You will be able to type your answers directly on the Slides in the attachment below, and they will automatically save. For the last part, where you have to draw your own cladogram on paper, you will take a picture of it and add that picture to the last page of the Slides document below. Then submit to me through Google classroom.

Finch Beak Evolution Peer CER evaluation and reflection

Please do not open until I instruct during class.

This is a completely private evaluation to see how your peers at your table collaborated with you to write a scientifically accurate CER as a group.

As a table group, have one person open and share the document to all other group members so you can work on the research poster at the same time.

Fill out each section of the poster with all the research you have gathered concerning Dr. Tony Allison and his scientific method experiment on malaria and sickle cell in 1954 Africa. Be as specific, detailed, sophisticated, precise as you can be! Use plenty of scientific vocabulary. Use your chromebook to find more.
