RS1 IB MYP Biology I-5th Period Assignments

On Wednesday, January 18 students began working on a final model for Unit 2: Alexandria's sickle cell disease.  Attached are slides with a brief introduction and some possible ways to organize information, and a final model checklist.  

Attached are the following:
1.  A slides presentation, in which we review yesterday's punnett square practice and then cover "exceptions to the rules."

In class today we worked on several things.  
1. Reviewed Genetics vocabulary, which is posted below as a pdf from which flash cards can be made.
2.  A crossword puzzle of the same terms.
3.  Punnett Square Review

TBH, We took some notes on the whiteboard for which there are no slides, and I used different sheets for different students in different classes.  If you missed these lessons, please see me in person for instruction and associated assignments.

Today we'll continue analyzing gene expression data for the case studies we read on Friday.  Use the attached documents.

First, students should read the article on oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes.
Following that, students will complete L1.4b by analyzing gene expression in cancerous tissues.

After our quiz, students were asked to read the attached article and answer the attached questions.

We will use computers or personal devices in class to access the attached slide show.  Students will have a paper copy of the handout on which to record your answers.

Pages 1-4 only.
This should be completed with your table group.

Use colored pencils to highlight each vocabulary term in the text.  Then, use that same color to fill in the key and diagrams on the opposite side.

Upload your photo and/or written response from the last page of the L1.1 student handout.

Today in class we'll review experimental variables and briefly cover writing of research questions and hypotheses.  Then there will be an opportunity to practice.

Today in class we will use a free smartphone app to collect data on heart rate.  We will then enter that data and answer some additional questions on a google form.

Attached are the definitions of life, slides covering the characteristics of all living things, slides showing the images, and a google form to submit your group's responses.


Submit one form per group, but be sure to include all group member names.

Use the attached observation form to gather data from 3 living organisms outside.  
- Make at least 5 observations.
- Connect those observations to at least 3 CoL (Characteristics of Life) for each organism.
- Write 2 scientific questions about each organism.
