Hello Amundsen Community!

My name is Cameron McConnell and I am the Varsity Baseball Coach. I also teach World Studies and IB Entrepreneurship at Amundsen. I earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame, where I majored in anthropology and computer applications. I also earned a Master’s in Education from Cameron University.

I grew up playing baseball and basketball, but gave up basketball after my freshman year in high school to pursue baseball full time. I was a three-year varsity letter winner at Deerfield High School where I earned all-conference honors as a junior and was named defensive MVP as a senior. I was also a member of two state and one regional championship teams with Top Tier and received invitations to the two Area Code Games tryouts. I earned a selection as a representative of the Central Suburban League at the Stevenson Showcase and was also selected to the Jack Kaiser All-Star Game. In 2007 I was rated by Baseball American as the #34 overall prospect in the state of Illinois and the #16 overall prep prospect. The Prep Baseball Report named me the best defensive catcher in Illinois as well as the #15 overall prep prospect.

I accepted a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Notre Dame, where I went on to be a four year varsity letter winner. I appeared in over 120 games for the Fighting Irish during my four year career and ranked 7th in the NCAA in throwing out base stealers my sophomore year. During my junior year I was one of 53 catchers to be named to the watchlist for the 2010 Johnny Bench Award by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, an award given annually to the top division one collegiate catcher in the country.

Once my playing career came to an end, I turned to coaching, and have spent the last ten years working with high school and collegiate athletes aspiring to play at the next level. I spent five years as a head coach with the Northern Knights travel baseball program, where I coached 15-18 year olds, focusing on their development and recruitment. After my time with the Knights I spent two years as an assistant coach at Cameron University working with catchers and helping develop and implement the offensive philosophy for our hitters. After leaving Cameron University, I joined the staff at Top Tier Baseball where I am now in my third year as a head coach.

I’m excited to bring my experience, knowledge and expertise to Amundsen and am looking forward to the opportunity to aid student athletes in not only their athletic aspirations, but all of their future successes.

Go Vikings!
