Meet Jorie Pesce

Hello!

My name is Jorie Pesce and I teach ESL I/II, as well as coordinate the English Learner (EL) Program. Here's a little bit about me:

  • I've been a teacher for 11 years, and six of those years are at Amundsen! My teaching experience includes 9th-10th grade English, 9th-12th grade English as a second language, and 7th grade Language Arts.
  • I appreciate the IB philosophy and teach students to be global-minded people, strong communicators, critical thinkers, and caring individuals.
  • I incorporate students' identities, cultural backgrounds, and opinions into my teaching, and utilize students as teachers as much as possible.
  • Outside of the classroom, I love working with parents in the BAC and PAC, supporting our EL newcomers, and sponsoring the Viking Book Club!

To learn more about my class and involvements, please visit my other pages. There, you'll find information about the course, syllabi, and other helpful resources.

I always make myself available to help students, and believe one-on-one or small group support from a teacher is the best way to learn. Extra support for students and/or families can be requested via e-mail at [email protected]

Thanks for visiting!

Jorie Pesce

Update for Parents of MYP English 1 - 11/21/19

Hi parents and guardians!

It was so nice to see you at Report Card Pick-Up and have helpful conversations about your children and their progress in MYP English 1. I wanted to update you on two items:

1. Addressing mechanics, usage, & grammar needs through quill.org. Your child will complete an online diagnostic assesment this weekend. After taking the quiz, quill.org will create an individualized plan for your child based on his/her ability. Then your child will be assigned grammar lessons for homework 1-2 times per week. In class, I plan to reinforce specific skills through mini-lessons. Additionally, I plan to assess students based on their individual grammar progress that they exhibit in their writing. Please encourage your child to stay on track with their quill.org practice, as it will help both their writing and PSAT skills improve!

2. Monologue performances for "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien - Monday, December 2nd until Thursday, December 5th. The summative assessment for our current unit is a written and performed monologue as a character from our text. Students are responsible for completing the revision/editing process three times. This weekend, students must perform their monologues for a family member or friend and receive feedback (based on a provided checklist). The final draft is due on Tuesday, November 26th. Over Thanksgiving break, the expectation is that students work on memorizing their monologues. To alleviate nerves, please encourage your child to perform his/her monologue in front of the family or a small group of students - maybe even at a Thanksgiving celebration?!

As always, I appreciate your support and parent engagement. I really enjoy teaching this wonderful class of freshmen, and I so look forward to seeing how much they develop and grow this year!

Sincerely,

Jorie Pesce

Summer Reading_Extended Learning Suggestions

Hello Parents & Students!

Attached are suggestions for summer reading and extended learning. We encourage students to continue to read, write, and critically think over the summer. The books recommendations are from students, teachers, IB, and other schools. Feel free to read texts from the list, or find your own. Just make sure what you read introduces you to new perspectives and pushes your thinking.

Have a great summer!

Mrs. Pesce
Students, please attend Wednesdays after-school for support and time to complete missing work in Rm 301 from 3:00-4:00 with Mrs. Pesce. Don't let your missing assignments pile up to the point where it's overwhelming! If you cannot attend Wednesdays, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Remember: if you are frequently absent, tardy, or disengaged in class, you are still responsible for completing all work in a timely manner. Communicate with me - I want to help you succeed!

Parents, if your child has a low grade and missing work, please encourage them to see me on Wednesdays after school from 3:00-4:00 in Rm 301 for the remainder of Quarter 3.
