I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Brian McMahon, a Learning Behavior Specialist II and teacher of Algebra 1. My experience in education ranges from teaching kindergarten through eleventh grade. I have always had the passion and drive to teach students who learn in a unique way. Prior to teaching, I worked in hospitals as a technology specialist in the area of radiology services.
I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Elmhurst College, graduating Magna Cum Laude, with a focus on urban education.
I obtained my Master’s Degree in Special Education Curriculum Adaptation and Teacher Leadership in the urban education arena, with the University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
The classes I teach incorporate growth mindset, critical thinking, perseverance through engaging learning. I focus on exploring, creating and sharing the beauty of academics, as well as how to build the skills to become an independent person through the International Baccalaureate approaches to learning skills of Thinking, Communication, Social Skills, Self-Management, and Research Skills. Through this and the high expectations set for all students, the growth the students have academically sets them up for their future success.
I am a co-sponsor the Gender Sexuality Alliance which supports all students in all areas of their identity and confidence.
I am the sponsor for the Movie Club which allows students to screen current / past movies and have discussions around their creation and message.
In my time outside the classroom, I enjoy cooking international meals, reading, crafting, walking by the lakeshore, and spending time with my friends and family.
