Course Description

World Studies aims at providing students with a more in- depth body of information than Honors World History, concerning the world’s history as well as the social, political, economic, geographical, cultural, religious and military components that go along with global historical topics. Students will be called upon to question their knowledge of the world and the societies therein. As much as possible, world history seeks to cultivate a perspective in reading, understanding, and analyzing historical events, places and people. In keeping with the mission of the International Baccalaureate and the Middle Years Program, this course aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Students are encouraged to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand the perspectives and differences of a variety of peoples. This curriculum has been developed to represent the big ideas or key concepts relevant to Individuals and Societies: change; global connections; time, place and space; and systems. In a double honors course students will develop academic independence, research skills, sophisticated writing, and the ability to comprehend and analyze complex texts.
