Elizabeth Feldman, MD, was a co-founder of the Health Center and has been its Medical Director since its opening in 1996. Liz has been a family physician for 24 years and is Board certified in family medicine and adolescent medicine. She is particularly interested in promoting the health and empowerment of young women. Mark Merten, PsyD, has been a clinical psychologist at the Health Center since it opened in 1996. He provides individual, group, and family counseling. Mark also works with many freshmen through an academic support group. Further, he trains a psychology student each year, offering Amundsen students another person to work with. The theme across Mark’s work is the promotion of healthy youth development.
Martha Christensen, PsyD, joined the Health Center staff in 2005. She has several years experience as a clinical psychologist working with children and adolescents in a variety of settings. Martha will be collaborating with Mark to run the academic support group and will also provide counseling for students and their families. Shelley Bagri, APRN, BC, a pediatric nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, has been with the Health Center for 9 years. Shelley provides primary and preventive care to students, and has worked with student groups on improving healthy eating and physical activity. Shelley also has several years experience working with adolescents and their emotional needs. (Shelley works Tuesday-Friday.)
Susan Kurtenbach, APRN, is a family nurse practitioner who has worked at our Health Center since it opened in 1996. She splits her time between Amundsen and Lake View Health Centers. Susan provides primary and preventive care for students and is particularly focused on working with adolescents on issues of smoking cessation and substance abuse, as well as nutrition and fitness. Dina Robinson, CMA, has been our Medical Assistant for 5 years and is also one of the health educators. Dina splits her time between Amundsen and Lake View Health Centers. Last year, a group of Amundsen girls and Dina started a group called Sister 2 Sister. Dina also coordinates the summer internship program at Illinois Masonic which provides summer jobs for both Amundsen and Lake View students. (Dina works Wednesdays through Fridays here.)
Mandy Gonzalez has been our secretary for over 3 years. She coordinates the front desk, including organizing consent forms and insurance information, and scheduling appointments. Mandy also promotes and coordinates the free dental van services. Mandy is usually the first and last Health Center staff person students see when they visit.
Jeanine Menczywor, MPH, CHES, has been our site supervisor since 2005. She is also a health educator and provides individual health education counseling as well as presentations for classrooms. This year Jeanine is partnering with the guidance counselors and several students to develop a student health group that will serve as a resource for those interested in health careers and that will promote healthy messages around the school.
Christine Kopf, MSHA, is the Administrative Director for the Health Center. She has served in that role for the past four years. She has an extensive health care management background. Christine finds working with the Health Center to meet student needs to be a very rewarding experience.
We also have on our staff a physical therapist who works on Wednesday mornings and a nutritionist who works on Fridays. In addition, we train several students a year, including psychology externs, family practice resident physicians, and nurse practitioner students.
